What the studies say. . . .

Young Man Using Aloe Vera Gel for Acne

The most common treatment for acne prescribed by doctors are topical retinoids (Vitamin A Cream to you and me) and guess what, a recent study has shown that if you add Aloe Vera Gel to this treatment it is even more effective!  Wow!  We always knew that Aloe Vera is good for skin healing (and so did the ancients – it has been used for millennia), but having it proved by science is really cool.

Earlier studies have already shown us that Aloe Vera gel is good for scar healing - this study reported wound healing in acne patients happened an incredible 72 hours faster with AV gel than without it.  So there is real scientific proof that natural acne treatments including Aloe Vera can be highly effective.

Another study has concluded that Aloe Vera gel increased the effectiveness of Ocimum gratissimum oil lotions for Acne vulgaris and the combo was even better than 1% Clindamycin cream (a typical acne treatment containing antibiotics).  Ocimum gratissimum or clove basil oil is an essential oil used in aromatherapy.

The amazing wound healing properties revealed in these studies are further evidence of the beneficial compounds in Aloe Vera gel which we know to be:
•    Antiseptic
•    Antibiotic
•    Antifungal
•    Anti-inflammatory

In addition, the University of Maryland has stated in a review of the scientific literature that the use of Aloe Vera gel on the skin is widely accepted to be safe, although it shouldn’t be used on open wounds.

PRECAUTION:  Some people have been shown to be allergic, so test on a small area of skin first.  Don’t use if you have been allergic to garlic, onions or members of the Lily family in the past.

How to Use Aloe Vera Gel for Acne

1.  Use a fresh leaf.  If you have an Aloe Vera plant at home, you can simply extract the gel from the leaf, and rub on your face.  Leave for a few minutes and then rinse off.  The gel has astringent qualities to remove dead cells, and will also soothe away any inflammation.  It will help to kill any infection causing bacteria and calm redness and pimples.

2.  If the above is too messy for you, or you don’t have your own plant, choose a high quality cream or lotion containing as much pure Aloe Vera gel as possible.  Avoid ones which contain lots of other things or too many artificial chemical ingredients.

3.  Many of the sites about Acne treatments online recommend mixing Aloe Vera gel with jojoba oil for the best results.  Aloe Vera gel by itself on the skin can be a little too strong for some acne sufferers, but the combination with Jojoba gets highly recommended.

4. Another tip we can highly recommend is avoiding any products which contain alcohol, which is far too drying for the skin.   We prefer products with as high a percentage of Aloe Vera gel as possible, (the closer it is to the beginning of the list of ingredients, the more AV gel the product contains) and of course, they have to have the IASC Seal to guarantee their safety and quality.
